Like all other electronic devices, your LCD transmitter of your dog training collar will react to the cold. Chances are that you will be hunting in the cold weather. It is therefore important to take care of your LCD transmitter and protect it from the cold as much as possible so that you get the best performance from this instrument.

Your LCD transmitter is the device that you carry to send correction, either beeping or stimulation, to your dog. The dog will wear the receiver on the collar, against the bottom of his neck so that he can receive your correction. Many of the newer transmitters are using LCD screens that are easier to use than the older models with antennas. However you have to be careful that the LCD screen does not get wet nor get exposed to the extreme elements. This includes the cold.

The LCD transmitter is usually smaller than a regular transmitter and can be placed in your pocket. Ideally, all units of the dog training system work best at room temperature and should always be stored at room temperature. When you are out in the cold, you may not get the best performance from these units because of the climate. During the winter months when you are using your LCD transmitter, make sure that you keep it with you or in a place that is at room temperature when you are not using it. You will also want to make sure that you keep an extra set of batteries as the battery life in a cold unit will not be as long.

When you are transporting your unit, keep the system, including the LCD transmitter, with you in the cab of the truck and not in the back. This will further protect it from the cold. You should always make sure that the unit is fully charged before you head out and that it is charged at room temperatures. If the batteries get cold, you should wait until they reach room temperature before recharging.

In most models, the receiver batteries are rechargeable and the transmitter batteries are a 9 volt battery. This is why it is a good idea to have a few extra 9 volt batteries with you when you are out in the winter months. Keep the batteries at room temperature and they will last longer. Your LCD transmitter will let you know that you are running low on batteries by signaling with a flashing red light, in most cases. Some units will let you know by showing a battery bar on the screen. Do not wait until you run out of battery power to change the battery in your LCD transmitter.

Another way to care for your LCD transmitter in the cold is to wear gloves. This will give further warmth to the unit. By keeping the unit warm, not hot, you will get better use from the transmitter. It is also important that you do not get the unit wet. While many receivers are waterproof, the transmitters are not. Use a covering or keep the unit stored in your jacket or other water proof place when you are hunting in the snowfall or the rain.

By taking care of your LCD transmitter and keeping it at room temperature as often as possible, you will get better use out of the device. Keeping extra batteries on hand, making sure that the receiver batteries are fully charged and making sure that batteries are at room temperature before being charged is the best way to take care of your dog training system and LCD transmitter. If the screen gets wet, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth.
